The return Hajj flight with Bangladeshi Hajis from Saudi Arabia to Dhaka will begin today (Monday), with pilgrims returning after performing Hajj amid irregularities and mismanagement by around 50 private Hajj agencies. The return Hajj flights will continue till September 26.
The first return flight carrying Bangladeshi Hajis will leave for Dhaka from Madina today (Monday).
Meanwhile, a total of 89 Bangladeshi Hajj pilgrims, including 15 women, had died in Saudi Arabia till yesterday (Sunday).
Sources said hundreds of Bangladeshi pilgrims have suffered harassment after the conclusion of Hajj in Makkah on account of negligence by 50 private Hajj agencies. Many of the Hajis, who went to perform Hajj under these 50 agencies, were seen staying on the streets at night because of their mismanagement, sources added.
The Bangladesh Hajj Mission in Saudi Arabia and Saudi Hajj Authority alleged that these 50 Hajj agencies are involved in the harassment of these pilgrims.
Religious affairs minister Principal Motiur Rahman told reporters in Saudi Arabia that his ministry will take punitive action against the owners of the agencies responsible for such mismanagement and harassment of the pilgrims after he returns home.
However, the Hajj Agencies Association of Bangladesh (HAAB) claimed that such incidents did not occur in Saudi Arabia this year.
“It’s true that some Hajis went missing after ending Hajj, but they were returned to the agency concerned or the Hajj mission office with the help of security personnel. But news such as Bangladeshi pilgrims spending their nights on Saudi streets is totally fake and baseless,” HAAB secretary-general Shahadat Hossain Taslim told this correspondent yesterday (Sunday) from Saudi Arabia over cell-phone. He strongly denied that any such incident occurred in Saudi Arabia this year.
According to the Dhaka and Makkah Hajj offices, this year a total of 1,27,298 people, including members of Hajj management, went to Saudi Arabia through 371 Hajj flights to perform Hajj. A total of 1.20 lakh Hajj pilgrims went to perform Hajj through 528 agencies approved by the religious affairs ministry.
Medical centres in Saudi Arabia provided treatment to 51,881 Hajj pilgrims who had gone there.
This year, a total of 89 pilgrims died in Saudi Arabia. Of them, 52 died in Makkah, seven in Madina, two in Jeddah, 18 in Mina and 10 in Arafat, sources in the Makkah Hajj office said.
