Low rawhide prices

Seasonal traders refrained from buying hides from outlying areas this year

It is disturbing to note that the collected animal hides after the Eid could neither be sold due to the very low prices, nor can these be preserved owing to increasing maintenance costs. According to a report of this newspaper on Saturday, wholesalers and tanners are unwilling to buy animal skins from the small traders for the price sought. According to the wholesalers and tannery owners, the demand in the international leather market is lower than previous years owning to the China-USA trade war. The delay in setting up an effluent treatment plant (ETP) in the leather industrial city of Savar has also played a part in keeping large export orders at bay.

Every year at the time of the Eid-ul-Azha hides traders get united to safeguard their interest regarding buying hides of sacrificial animals. This year too there is no exception. Seasonal traders used to be seen buying hides of sacrificial animals in the outlying areas of the country. After buying hides from different places in the country they would sell the same to the wholesalers. Nothing of this sort happened this year. Many were forced to sell hides to wholesalers at half of the purchased prices.

As about 60 per cent of the total required rawhide for the tannery industry is collected during Eid-ul-Azha, the tanners plan to collect rawhide as much as possible at lower prices during this time of the year. Due to stockpiling of hides purchased last year in the warehouses and lack of capital many traders refrained from purchasing hides this year. Besides, due to lack of facility in   preserving hides in outlying areas of the country, traders had to sell their hides. It is alleged that there is a trick of the syndicate behind the fall in the prices of raw hides. Since it is difficult to preserve hides the syndicate takes advantage of this.

Aside from the China-USA trade war, the demand for leather-based products has dropped because of the invention of alternatives of leather across the world. According to tannery owners because of shifting of the tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar, around 225 tanneries are closed down. Irregularities in rawhide collection do not augur well for the industry as well as the economy of the country. Low prices of hides have also affected the poor hard as the prices of hides are usually distributed among them. It is expected that the authorities concerned should take measures for processing and preserving hides locally.
