At least three people were killed and 20 others injured during clashes between police and locals in Kalihati upazila under Tangail district yesterday. The clashes broke out as police tried to remove a road blockade and intercepted a procession protesting the recent rape of a woman in Kalihati. The deceased were identified as Faruk, 32, from Satutia village under Ghatail upazila, Shamim, 35, son of Alhaz of Kalia village and Shyamal Chandra Paul, 35, of Kalihati. Witnesses said hundreds of people brought out a procession and blocked the Ghatail-Kalihati Highway in Kalihati at 4:30pm yesterday protesting the rape of a woman before her son on September 15 and demanding punishment to the rapists.
Agitated people also brought out separate processions at Kalihati Bus Stand and Hamidpur area in Ghatail upazila. As a team from the Kalihati Police Station intercepted the processions, a chase and counter chase ensued that soon escalated into clashes. Police fired several rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control, leaving over twenty people injured including seven bullet hit. After the injured were brought to the Kalihati Upazila Health Complex, the on-duty doctor declared bullet-hit Faruk dead. Another bullet injured, Shamim, succumbed to injury while being taken to the Tangail Medical College Hospital (TMCH). Shyamal Chandra Paul, 35, died while being taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital from Tangail.  Four others with bullet injuries were admitted to the TMCH.
As the news of Faruk’s death spread in the area, agitated people vandalised several vehicles and put a blockade on Tangail-Mymensingh Highway. Movement of vehicles on the highway remained suspended yesterday night.
