Water logging in the city cannot be removed until encroachment on land and drainage channels are stopped, says Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Huq. “Politically influential and rich people are responsible for grabbing of land. Water logging from the city cannot be removed only through delivering speeches if land grabbing continues,” he said while addressing a consultation meeting at ward no 29 at Mohammadpur under the DNCC on Wednesday. The DNCC mayor regretted that once there were 50 canals in the city but now even half of them exist. “The rest canals were encroached by the influential quarters,” he added. “The ward councillors are politically very influential. I hope that they will not misuse their authorities in discharging their responsibilities,” he said.
The DNCC mayor attended such meeting first time since after he assumed office as the mayor on April 29 this year for consultation with the residents of the ward on civic problems, their complaints and opinions. Local councillor Nurul Islam highlighted different problems of his ward with the help of data and statistics.
He alleged that a large portion of Mohammadpur Krishi Market has been encroached upon by influential quarters in connivance with a section of unscrupulous employees. Several hundred local people attended the consultation meeting.
