Workers of an age-old jute mill and a ready-made garment factory yesterday staged demonstrations in the city demanding salary arrears and festival allowances.    The agitated workers of Amin Jute Mills also took to the streets and put up a barricade on Chittagong-Hathazari Road at around 10am. Commuters had to face untold sufferings as the road blockade triggered huge traffic congestion on both sides of the road.
The industrial police sources said that the workers yesterday met the general manager of the jute mill demanding salary arrears and festival bonus. However, the general manager told the agitating workers that it was not possible to clear the dues by Thursday. Arifur Rahman, inspector of industrial police said that the agitating students returned to their workplace after they were assured of getting their dues. Josna Afroj, GM of Amin Jute Mill salaries of a few weeks remained outstanding as the mill was incurring losses.
Meanwhile, the workers of a readymade garment factory took to the streets in Baby Super Market area of the city demanding salary dues. The workers of Kelvin Fashion also blockaded Bayezid-Oxygen Road at 4pm.   The Industrial Police said that they sat in a negotiation meeting with the factory authorities. The factory authorities agreed to repay all dues including salary and festival allowance by September 20. Later, the workers decided to lift the blockade after getting assurance of receiving the salary arrears.
