Irregularities grip Bamondi cattle market

There has been an abundant flow of cattle into Bamundi-Nishipur  in  Gangni upazila, but both the buyers and sellers are being allegedly cheated by the lessees there.  The victims allege that an anarchic situation is prevailing in the market where no sign is showing the rate tolls. The lessees, who are local influential people, are collecting tolls at their whims, they blamed.
Finding no other alternative the helpless cattle sellers and buyers are being forced to pay the tolls at high rate. The tolls relaised are not mentioned in payment receipt.
Omar Ali of village Kochubaria in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia district had purchased a cow at Tk20,000 and later paid Tk 320 as toll while seller Riazul Islam paid a further Tk 100 to the lessee on the same transaction.
Similarly, Kamaruzzaman of village Chokghoga in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia district had purchased a cow at Tk 16,000; and on the transaction the leaseholder realised Tk 420 as toll from both the seller and the buyer. But the amount was not mentioned in the payment receipt.
When asked many sellers and buyers said they did not know the rate of tolls. The leaseholder and his henchmen often become angry when asked about the rate of tolls.
Abul Amin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Gangni said he will take strong action against the leaseholder if any irregularities are found.
