President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed deep shock at the demise of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, reports UNB. "His (Vajpayee's) contribution to the development of this region will ever be remembered with due respect," the President said in a condolence message.
He also said his demise has also created an irreparable vacuum in the politics o the subcontinent. Meanwhile, at a condolence message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Atal Bihari Vajpayee was our great friend and highly respected in Bangladesh".
"We're deeply shocked at the sad demise of the former Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the most famous sons of India," Hasina said.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be remembered for contributing towards good governance and for highlighting issues affecting the common people of India as well as for regional peace and prosperity, she added. Prime Minister said as a token of recognition for his invaluable contribution to Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971, the Bangladesh government conferred on him the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour. "Today is certainly a day of great sadness for all of us in Bangladesh."
On behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh and on her own behalf, she expressed heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the government and the mourning people of India, and to the members of the bereaved family.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali will travel to New Delhi this morning to attend the funeral of Vajpayee.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee died yesterday after a prolonged illness. He was 93.
