Man arrested with huge amount of yaba tablets

Sexagenarian Jahir Ahmed alias ‘Moulavi’ Jahir is known as law-abiding taxpaying citizen who along with his sons runs a family-owned pharmacy. On Wednesday, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) discovered his new identity: a yaba dealer.

The law enforcers in separate drives recovered 2.7 lakh yaba from two houses of religious instructor (Moualvi) Jahir and seized Tk16.64 lakh in the capital’s Elephant Road area. Six alleged drug dealers were also arrested during the drive.

The worth of the drug would be around Tk7.25crore, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, Legal and Media Wing director of Rab. He said this at a press briefing at Rab media center at Karwan Bazar yesterday. The other detainees are Faisal Ahmed, 31, Miraj Uddin Nishan, 21, Toufiqul Islam alias Sunny, 21, Sanjay Chandra Halder, 20 and Mominul Alam alias Momin, 30.

Mufti Mahmud said Jahir and his eldest son Jahirul Islam Babu, 28, conducting drug trading by hiring flats in different places of Dhaka.

Earlier, on April 25 Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) officials arrested Babu and now he is in prison.

Jahir's other family members also involved with the yaba trade.

Jahir is also involved with a syndicate, who is bringing yaba pills from Teknaf.

Mufti Mahmud quoting Jahir said the representative of the syndicate is Alam alias Burma Alam. He lives in Maungdaw in Myanmar and also in Teknaf. He smuggled yaba from Maungdaw through Naf River. Zahir’s son-in-law Abdul Alim, Nurul Amim and Momin collected the yaba from Burma Alam and send it to Dhaka. Various types of electrical equipments such as fan, washing machine, AC etc were used to transfer yaba with the courier service.

In initial interrogation Faisal Ahmed said that he was working as a senior officer at a private bank and got involved in the drug trading three years ago.

Miraj Uddin said he is a student of a private university. Momim and his house located in the same area and he got involved in yaba trading through acquainted with Momim.

Toufiqul Islam said he is a first year student of a college in Dhaka. Through acquainted with Miraj he got involved with yaba trading.

In primary interrogation, Sanjay Chandra Halder said that he passed HSC from a college in Madaripur and joined the family business.
