Release Khaleda before Eid, say BNP leaders

The BNP yesterday demanded the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia before Eid-ul-Azha. “We demand the release of our chairperson before Eid after withdrawal of all cases. We also demand that proper treatment be provided to her,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press conference at the party central office in Naya Paltan of the city.

Rizvi accused the government of not meting out justice to the former premier. "Our chairperson is being deprived of all of her rights. She is not being treated properly inside prison," he said. BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Khairul Kabir Khokan, Khaleda's adviser Abdus Salam and Monir Hossain, among others, were present on the occasion.

Rizvi also accused the government of carrying out repression on students who were involved in the recent agitation for safe roads. He also demanded immediate withdrawal of the false cases filed against them.  

Also yesterday, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said they would not take part in any farcical election under the present government.

He was speaking at a meeting, organised by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa), at Dhaka Reporters Unity, demanding the release of Khaleda Zia who has been serving a five-year jail term in a graft case. The meeting presided over by Jagpa vice-president barrister Tasmia Prodhan. Khan said the people have started taking a stand to change the prevailing situation in the country. He mentioned that many people want to know whether they would take part in the next polls. “Of course, we want to take part in the polls. But we'll never be part of a farcical election like the city polls where people couldn't cast their votes,” he said.

Khan also said they would take part in the next election after freeing Khaleda Zia through movement.
