In meteorogical terms, it was not classified as a heat wave, but drying up of rain raised the mercury to a high of 34.6 degrees Celsius in the city. The situation was the same for commuters as well as sacrificial animals arriving in trucks from the countryside to the capital's cattle markets.
This was the sight yesterday (Thursday), if one dared to take a journey on business. All roads were clogged. No one could offer any reason, but traffic was moving at a snail's pace. The heat and humidity made matters worse. Added to this was automobile fumes polluting the air.
A meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office said the capital had been experiencing little rain for the past few days. This was because a depression over the Bay had turned into a land depression on Wednesday, taking all the rain towards the western side of the Odisha coast and further westwards to central India.
However, the monsoon remains fairly active in parts of the north, with Netrokona recording the highest 63mm of rainfall till 5am yesterday. It was negligible elsewhere in the country.
The mercury rose to 35.5C in the tea garden town of Srimangal, where the English planters had their summer retreat to escape the heat and humidity. Dhaka redeived only traces, or drops, of rain recorded by the rain gauge at capital's Met Office.
The forecast for the next 72 hours said there would be plenty of rain -- light or moderate to heavy at places. There would be rain at a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, with moderately heavy falls at other places in the country today.
