Call to respond all humanitarian crises

RAJSHAHI: Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) is committed to respond all humanitarian crises including natural disasters, emergencies and situations of violence for the sake of reducing sufferings of people in need, said speakers at a discussion here yesterday, reports BSS.

They viewed BDRCS has been working in multi-sectoral approach so that all victims of both natural and manmade disasters could be brought under its services at ones.

They made the observation while addressing a “Regional Roundtable Dialogue on Safer Access towards BDRCS’s Humanitarian Action” at Hotel Nice International in the city.

BDRCS in partnership with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) jointly organised the dialogue devising ways and means on how to expand its activities through collective efforts.

Commissioner-in-Charge of Rajshahi division Aminul Islam addressed the meeting as the chief guest with BDRCS’s district unit Vice-chairman Mahbub Jaman Bhulu in the chair.

City unit Vice-chairman Rejaul Karim, Secretary Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, district unit secretary Nighat Parveen and ICRC Bangladesh Cooperation Coordinator Yun Kyeong Han addressed the meeting as resource persons.

During his keynote presentation, Abdul Halim, Director (Community Development) of BDRCS gave an overview of its overall humanitarian activities in the country.

Director (Youth and Volunteers) Sikder Mokaddes Ahmed and Assistant Director (International Relation) shared their previous working experience on the issue.

Aminul Islam put emphasis on strengthening understanding of the external stakeholders about the benevolent activities. He advocated for expanding the messages of the BDRCS among the school and college-level students so that more and more competent workforce is generated to this field.

Islam also underlined the need for strengthening networking with the relevant stakeholders to reinforce acceptance and access of BDRCS to affected people and communities. This will help creating safe working environment for staff and volunteers of BDRCS, especially in the sensitive and insecure context.

More than 40 persons comprising law enforcers, members of the civil society, politicians, journalists and other stakeholders joined the meeting sharing their views on the issue.
