England lifted the trophy in the first-ever international ICRC Twenty20 Cricket Tournament for People with Physical Disabilities, beating Pakistan by 19 runs in an exciting final on September 10 at the BKSP (Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothisthan) ground.
Favoured by coins, England decided to bat first under sunny conditions and posted a big total of 175 for four, which was the highest total of the weeklong tournament. In their chase, Pakistan managed to pull off 156 for seven in the stipulated 20 overs.
Callum Flynn of England was adjudged the best batsman and player of the tournament for his wonderful flow of runs throughout the competition. He struck near about 200 runs from five-match road string.
Fayyaz Ahmed was the best bowler his wicket taking abilities and economic bowling in all his matches. He took 12 wickets from five matches with the best figures of 4-0-14-4, which he showcased against Bangladesh.
En rout to the final, England started their campaign with a defeat to hosts Bangladesh by 14 runs in the first match of the five-nation tourney on Sept 4. They then tasted their first victory with a 23-run win against India. Thereafter, they stunned Afghanistan by 3 runs and beat Pakistan by 8 runs to confirm their spot in the final.
Pakistan, on the other hand, began their mission on a winning note, beating Afghanistan by 8 wickets. They then beat Bangladesh by 20 runs in the rain-affected second match.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, finished their T20 campaign in third place with two wins and two losses. India placed fourth in the point-table, with Afghanistan finishing at the bottom. Both countries scripted one win apiece from their respective matches.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) took the initiative to organise the tournament to highlight physically challenged athletes and help them with better social integration.
Bangladesh will also host the next edition of the T20 tournament, which will be held on a larger scale, the ICRC announced at the closing ceremony.
Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy, former cricket skipper Shafiqul Haque Hira, former national team player Aminul Islam Bulbul and head of ICRC-Dhaka Christine Cipolla were present at the event.
