Student’s death sparks protests in Rangpur

Man killed in capital, college student in Jashore

Local people blocked Dinajpur-Rangpur highway for two and half hours and vandalised eight vehicles following the death of a school student in a road crash at Darshana in Rangpur city yesterday, reports UNB. Quoting witnesses, additional superintendent of Rangpur Police said a Rangpur- bound bus from Gaibandha crashed into a bicycle coming from the opposite direction, leaving Jion, a class X student of Collectorate School and College and son of Zahidul Islam of Badarganj upazila, dead on the spot. Enraged by the incident, local people vandalised eight vehicles, including an ambulance.

The rowdy people also put up barricade on Rangpur-Dinajpur highway, disrupting traffic movement. On information, police went to the spot and charged baton to disperse them. Police also lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. In the capital, an unidentified man was killed as a passenger bus hit him in front of Hotel Imperial at Gulistan yesterday.

Police said a passenger bus of ‘Khaja Paribahan’ hit the unidentified man, aged around 35, in front of the hotel around 3:00pm, leaving him injured.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 3:20pm, said SI Solaiman Gazi of Paltan Model Police Station.

Police seized the killer bus but its driver and helper managed to flee, he said. Another UNB report adds: A college student was killed while another injured as a pick-up van hit a motorcycle on Jashore-Chuknagar road in Monirampur upazila Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Obhi, 21, son of Alam Master, a resident of Gobindapur village of the upazila and a second-year honours student of Jashore Government City College.

The accident took place when a goods-laden pick-up van hit the motorcycle ride by Obhi in front of Palli Bidyut office around 8:30 pm, leaving him dead on the spot injuring Murad Hossain, 19, critically, said Mokarram Hossain, officer-in-charge of Monirampur Police Station. Later, locals caught pick-up driver Abdul Latif, 40, and handed him over to police.
