The government scrapped the 7.5 per cent VAT imposed on private universities following mass street protests (above) by students.
The protesters celebrate (left) as they hear of the decision, taken at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Monday.
“The government does not want to create any impediment to the educational institutions at any cost and hamper public life. Considering this point of view, the government has decided to withdraw the 7.5 per cent VAT imposed on private universities and medical and engineering colleges in the fiscal year 2015–16,” the finance ministry said in a statement.
