September 14, 1982:
Princess Grace of Monaco, 53, died, a day after a stroke caused her to crash her car, which plunged off a mountain road in Monte Carlo. Her youngest daughter Stephanie was also in the car, but survived with bruises. The princess, formerly Grace Kelly, was a popular Hollywood actress who met Prince Rainier III of Monaco during filming of the Hitchcock film, To Catch a Thief. She then gave up a successful acting career at age 26 to marry the ruler of Monaco in 1956. They had three children.
September 11, 2001:
The worst terrorist attack in US history occurred as four large passenger jets were hijacked and then deliberately crashed, killing nearly 3,000 persons. Two fully-fuelled jumbo jets had departed Boston for Los Angeles. Both jets were diverted by the hijackers to New York City where they were piloted into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. The impact and subsequent fire caused both 110-story towers to collapse, killing 2,752 persons including hundreds of rescue workers and people employed in the towers.
‘Dust lady’: This photograph taken of Marcy Borders after she fought her way out of 1 World Trade Centre became one of the most enduring images of the 9/11 attacks. Borders died of cancer in August 2015.
