RANGPUR: There is no alternative to adopting comprehensive plans for ensuring sound and healthier ecosystems in all related sectors to protect biodiversity and living beings from the formidable threats of climate change.
High government officials and experts said this at the ‘Country Investment Plan Environment, Forest and Climate Change (CIP-EFCC) Consultation Workshop’ held at RDRS Convention Hall yesterday, reports BSS.
The Ministry of Environment and Forest organised the workshop under its ongoing project on ‘Strengthening the Environment, Forestry and Climate Change Capacities of
the Ministry of Environment and Forest and
its Agencies’.
The speakers said the changing climate, natural calamities and disasters have been increasingly posing threat to the agriculture sector, living, livelihood and all other sectors adversely affecting life of the common people in Rangpur region.
They narrated as how droughts, floods, excessive and fewer rainfalls, river erosion, lifting of undergoing water for irrigation purposes, using pesticides and chemical fertilisers and tobacco cultivation have been affecting agriculture as well as life in this region.
They also cited tremendous prospects prevailing in the region having laudable success in agriculture and huge reserve of minerals like unexplored coals for boosting the national economy through proper utilisation of those and industrialisations.
They suggested the government for formulating effective CIP and its proper implementation through aligning efforts of the government, development partners and non-government organisation in maximising resources to ensure healthy ecosystem despite climate change.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation and the United States Agency for International Development jointly extended support in arranging the divisional level workshop.
Some 100 officials representing various government and non-government organisations, university teachers, researchers,
journalists and other stakeholders from all
over Rangpur division participated in the
workshop and forwarded suggestions after group discussions.
Divisional Commissioner (Additional Secretary) Muhammad Dilwar Bakht addressed the workshop as chief guest while Additional Secretary (Development) of the environment ministry Abdullah Al Mohsin in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar and Deputy FAO Representative in Bangladesh M David Doolon addressed the event as the guests of honour. Deputy Director of the Department of Environment for Rangpur Akhteruzzaman Tuku delivered the welcome speech narrating the goals and objectives of the consultation workshop.
National Consultant Shah Mohammad Mohboob of FAO in Bangladesh delivered keynote presentation on the ‘CIP Zero Draft’ narrating climate change impacts on water, forestry, biodiversity, ecosystem, sanitation, public health and sustainable livelihoods.
