The High Court (HC) yesterday rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of the appointment of Prof. M Wahiduzzaman to the post of vice-chancellor (VC) of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU).
After concluding the final hearing on the writ petition, the HC bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali came up with the verdict after disposing of the rule issued last year, questioning the legality of the appointment of Prof. M Wahiduzzaman.
The HC verdict proved that the appointment of Prof. M Wahiduzzaman to the post of VC of NSTU was legal, said advocate Sheikh Ali Ahmed Khokon, one of the counsels for the VC, after the verdict.
The writ petition was filed by Dr Md Anwarul Bashar, an assistant professor of NSTU, challenging the legality of the appointment.
Following the petition, the HC had on February 10, 2016, issued a rule, asking the government authorities to explain why the appointment of Prof. Wahiduzzaman as NSTU VC should not be declared illegal and under what authority he was holding the post.
After final hearing on the rule, the HC bench yesterday discharged the rule on the ground that Dr Md Anwarul Bashar had no locus standi to move the petition as he had filed it with a malafide intention two years after Prof Wahiduzzaman’s appointment as the VC of NSTU.
During the hearing on the rule, attorney general Mahbubey Alam represented the government, while advocate Ahsanul Karim and advocate Amena Anwar appeared for Wahiduzzaman. On the other hand, advocate Dr Shahdeen Malik argued for Anwarul Bashar.
