The High Court (HC) yesterday extended its earlier bail order to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia till August 13 in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mustafizur Rahman passed the order following a prayer moved by Khaleda’s lawyer, advocate AJ Mohammad Ali, seeking an extension of her bail. The same HC bench is currently hearing an appeal filed by the BNP chief challenging the lower court verdict that had sentenced her to a five-year imprisonment period in the case. After concluding hearing for the 13th day, the HC bench yesterday adjourned the hearing till today morning.
During yesterday’s hearing, advocate AJ Mohammad Ali and advocate Abdur Rezak Khan, both counsels for the BNP chief, read out from the paper book and placed argument before the HC bench.
Earlier, on February 8, a Dhaka court had sentenced Khaleda to five years in jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. On March 12, the HC granted four months’ bail to Khaleda in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission. The four-month bail order expired on July 2. Since then, the HC bench has extended the bail order four times.
