Bangladesh will open their campaign on August 14 with a match against Uzbekistan.
Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) when detailed about the expectation of the Bangladesh to win medal, the Secretary General of the BOA Syed Shahed Reza said, “Actually the expectation is always high but in accordance with our limitation and ability we are focusing on three disciplines out 14 we will compete.”
“Asian Games is the biggest sports event in Asia and it is the second to the Olympic in the world, so to win medal from this occasion is very tough but we are looking to three disciplines, shooting, archery and women’s kabaddi.”
Syed Reza when explaining the grounds of expecting to do well in three disciplines said, “If we look back, we can expect with the shooting as they had medal in the Commonwealth Games, Islami Solidarity Games and SA Games, this is the only event we have high expectation. Women’s kabaddi, they also have medals in the last Asian Games and also in the SA Games, this time also we can believe on them that they could win a medal. Then comes archery as they won gold and became champions in the Islami Solidarity Archery Championship held in Dhaka.”
But the secretary general of the BOA and the general secretary of Bangladesh Archery Federation Kazi Rajibuddin Ahmed Chapal said that archery will do well but they did not mention prospect of winning any medal.
Shahed Reza also said that the experiences to be gained in the Asian Games by all the athletes will be an encouragement for them to develop their individual performance that will be also a huge boost up for the next SA Games, to be held in March 2019.
“I think the participation in the Asian Games will help the athletes to increase their temperament, confidence and will also build up their motivation, which will bear a very positive impact for the SA Games, if they could perform better in their individual events in the Asian Games,” said Reza.
Shahed Reza also said that some of the promising athletes, they picked up from the first ever Bangladesh Youth Games have already managed to send them at BKSP for continuous training where they could also get education facilities.
Bangladesh has been taking part in Asian Games since 1978. Since then Bangladesh won its maiden medal in 1986 when boxer Mosharraf Hossain won a bronze in super heavyweight category in 1986 in Seoul. The one and only gold medal earned by Bangladesh in men’s cricket team in Guangzhou in 2010. Kabaddi team either won silver or bronze medal since 1990.
