Shahidul taken to DB office from hospital

Drik Gallery Managing Director Shahidul Alam was taken back to the office of Detective Branch of police yesterday afternoon after necessary medical check-up at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), reports UNB.

Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said a DB team took back Shahidul Alam to the DB office on completion of his medical tests at the hospital.

The government, meanwhile, filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking stay on the High Court order that asked the authorities concerned to send Shahidul, now on a seven-day remand, to BSMMU for treatment

Deputy Commissioner (DB-North) Moshiur Rahman said Shahidul Alam was taken to the hospital around 8 am for treatment following a High Court order.

The Drik MD underwent necessary tests at the hospital and new course of actions will be taken according to their advice, said the police official.

In another development, the government filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking stay on the HC order that asked the authorities concerned to send Shahidul Alamto BSMMU for treatment.

After a short hearing, chamber judge Hasan Foez Siddique sent the petition to the full bench of the Supreme Court for hearing today.

The High Court on Tuesday asked the authorities concerned to send Shahidul to BSMMU as soon as possible for his medical treatment.

An HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order following a writ petition filed by Shahidul Alam’s wife Rehnuma Ahmed.

The court also asked the relevant authorities to form a medical board to examine his health and submit a report on his health condition today.

Rehnuma filed the writ petition challenging the legality of remanding her husband Shahidul Alam for interrogation. On Monday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur placed Shahidul Alam on a seven-day remand for interrogation in a case filed under the ICT Act. Detective Branch Inspector Arman Ali, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the noted photographer before the court seeking a 10-day remand.

Detectives detained Shahidul Alam, also Chairman of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, from his Dhanmondi residence on Sunday night following his Facebook posts on the ongoing student protests. Later, police filed a case against him with Ramna Police Station.
