Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said the wildcat transport strike by transport owners, on the face of recent student movement demanding safe road, weigh heavily on garments sector.
Due to the strike, a total of 1,168 TUEs (twenty-foot equivalent units) export containers missed scheduled shipment on August 5. The five ships which were suppose to carry these containers left Chattogram port as the containers could not be brought to the port due to the strike.
MainUddin Ahmed Mintu, first vice president of BGMEA, in a view exchanging meeting with journalists on recent situation of Chittagong port and the condition of garments sector of Chattogram in well ahead of Eid ul-Azha at BGMEA building in Chattogram yesterday.
“The economy of the country is being affected for these unexpected incidents. These also fall adverse effects,” he said.
He urged the government to take necessary steps so that incidents like this do not happen in the future. He also said in the students logical movement third force has entered. He urged the government to take action as the third force cannot fish in the trouble water.
He said the capacity of the Chittagong port jetties was 37,000 TUEs about two years ago now the port capacity has increased to 48,000 TUEs.
He urged to start the construction work of Bay terminal fast to expedite the business and to full fill the vision 2021 set by the Prime Minister.
He said if we work together the target of $50 billion annual export by 2021 will be possible.
