Rajshahi Police arrested a top leader of banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh from the city’s Terokhada area yesterday, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Mahmudur Rashid Ovi, Rajshahi divisional chief organiser of the outfit.
Huge leaflets, jihadi books, several mobile phone sets, a laptop, devices and pen drives were also recovered from his possession.
Inspector of Rajshahi Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Anwar Ali said a team of police arrested Ovi from his residence at Terokhada in the early hours.
He had secretly been working to recruit new members for the banned militant group, he said.
During interrogation, the arrested Hizb ut-Tahrir leader revealed that they had been working to form a militant outfit like ISIS of the Middle East in Bangladesh, said PBI additional police super Enamul Kabir.
He said they have found proof from the seized laptop that the militant group had contact with the ISIS.
