Ten-man Bangladesh went down to Saudi Arabia by 5-1 in the AFC Under-16 qualifying match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday. Sulaiman, Alduraywish, Al Brikan, Mali and Al Badan netted one goal each for Saudi Arabia. Sarwar Zaman Nipu could reduce one goal for Bangladesh. It was actually a showdown of a soccer powerhouse over the minnows when the powerful Saudi Arabian boys won the match playing with full dominance throughout 90 minutes game.
The Saudi boys, who are physically, technically and also in individual skills far better than the home side, played with full authority and destroyed the Bangladesh defence with ceaseless attacks. However, Bangladesh had the consolation of taking the lead. Mostajib just made a square pass for Hridoy who released the ball for an onrushing Sarwar Nipu. The latter looked very cool when he pushed the ball into net finding the opponents goalkeeper was out of position (1-0).
Bangladesh despite taking the lead against the flow of the game were forced to go for defensive strategy and Saudi Arabia equalised the margin taking the advantage of goalkeeper and a defender’s mixed up.
Alduraywish headed home the equaliser from a rising ball in front of goal-mouth (1-1). Bangladesh saw a great setback when goalkeeper Faisal saw a red card inside four minutes of the second half. Faisal, who was very sharp, fell on one and one situation with Al Brakin who outpaced defenders having a long ball and went into the open space. As Faisal had no option to stop Brakin but to make a bad tackle and referee did not hesitate to show the red card to Faisal.
The mighty Saudi Arabians took the lead through Al Brakin who beat a substitute goalkeeper Nur Alam on 56th minutes (2-1). Ten men Bangladesh saw another hindrance as Saudi awarded a penalty on 82nd minute when Sulaiman Aldhuwayhi was grounded after a light collision with Emon Khan inside the area and referee Ali Sabah Addy
directed for a penalty. Mali converted the spot kick giving no chance to Nur Alam (3-1). Sulaiman further increased the lead on 84th minute and the fourth goal for the team while it was a blunder of local defender Fahim Al Abadan enlarged margin on 89th minute to prove their supremacy and brightened the hope to move into the second round (5-1).
