AGENCIES, SYDNEY: Australia cricket captain Steve Smith says the upcoming Bangladesh tour will be tough for his relatively inexperienced side but he relishes the challenge of leading the squad to a series win. Speaking to reporters after flying into Sydney Airport from England on Tuesday night, Smith said it was disappointing to not retain the Ashes but the team was satisfied to bring back some silverware after winning the One Day series.
The tour of England had been a “big learning curve” for the team which would now be “working our backsides off” to win every game and series they play, he said.
The new-look Australian squad arrives in Dhaka on September 28 including two uncapped players in 30-year-old paceman Andrew Fekete and 22-year-old batsman
Cameron Bancroft.
Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has said his side faces its best chance yet of defeating Australia with the visitors fielding a relatively inexperienced squad.
Australia is grappling with huge changes after ex-skipper Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Chris Rogers and Shane Watson all retired during the Ashes tour.
“It’s going to be a tough tour but hopefully we can prepare well and adapt to the conditions accordingly and have a successful tour,” Smith said of the Bangladesh tour.
“This is an inexperienced side but I think we’re in a bit of a generation change in Australian cricket at the moment.”
The side still had experienced players in Adam Voges as vice captain and Shaun Marsh and Peter Siddle, the captain said. “I’m relaxed, I think we’ve got a good squad together, a couple of all-rounders, some good fast bowlers and plenty of batters. “I think we’ve got a good mix there and hopefully the guys can go over there and get the job done.”
