Hundreds of commuters yesterday faced untold sufferings as the CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers and owners enforced a non-stop strike in the city and the district to press home their eight-point charter of demands.
Earlier, the CNG drivers and owners declared to go for the strike after a holding a press conference at Chittagong Press Club on September 9.
Hundreds of people bound for offices, ready-made garments and educational institutes were seen waiting agonisingly for CNG-run auto-rickshaws in different intersections of the city.
The eight-point charter of demands include stopping sticker business in numberless CNG-run auto-rickshaws, taking steps against unscrupulous officials of the administration, providing license with the drivers after proper verification, taking steps against corrupt officials of the BRTA, stop lodging parking-related cases until having a parking system in the city, stopping harassment by the police in the name of verifying documents and including representatives of the CNG drivers and owners into the Regional Transport Committee.
SK Shikder, general secretary of CNG Auto-rickshaw Owner-Driver Unity Association said that they were enforcing the strike in the city and district to push for their legitimate demands.
“We will continue our strike until the eight-point demands are fulfilled,” added Shikder.
Shikder also claimed that the law enforcers have detained some the strikers from different points of the city.
