Language Fest from Sept 17
The 2nd National Language Festival will be held at Bangla Academy in the capital from September 17 to 19 to encourage the new generation in practicing standard Bangla language.
Bangla Academy with cooperation of Dhaka Residential Model College and My Academy will organised the fair, a press release said.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will inaugurate the festival as the chief guest at 10 am on September 17 at Abdul Karim Sahittyabisharad Auditorium of the academy.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be present as special guest while Bangla Academy President Emeritus Professor Anisuzzaman to chair.
One arrested with Yaba in Ctg
Chittagong Metropolitan Police in a raid arrested the person with 990 pieces of contraband yaba tablets from Shah Amanat Bridge area in Chittagong early yesterday.
The arrestee was identified as Shafique Ahmed, 30, son of Siddiqur Rahman, hailed from Gozaria upazila under Munshiganj district.
Bakalia thana police on secret information raided a bus of Green Line Service at Shah Amanat Bridge area under Bakalia police and arrested Shafique with 990 pieces of yaba tablets around 3.40am, said Mohammad Mohsin, officer- in-charge of Bakalia police station. A case was filed in this connection.
One ICS activist arrested
Police detained one Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activist raiding the Abdur Rab Hall of Chittagong University (CU) and padlocked 12 rooms of the dormitory on Tuesday.
Provosts, members of the proctorial body and police raided the dormitory at about 5pm.
The detainee was identified as --- Md Mostafa, a fourth year student of Physics department.
Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ismail said that two sacks of Jihadi books, number of stones, wooden sticks and rods were also seized from the dormitory.
Sources said ICS activists locked in altercation with some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Leage (BCL), while they went to Abdur Rab hall playground. Hearing the news, other BCL activists went to Rab hall.
After that police and proctorial body rushed to the spot and took the situation under control by raiding 12 ICS dominated rooms.
Contacted, CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury said that the situation on the campus was under control and they padlocked the raided 12 rooms.
Man to die for killing wife
A Chittagong court yesterday handed down death sentence to a man for murdering his wife at Satkania upazila in 2010, court officials said.
"He (Ashraf Ali) will be hanged," pronounced acting Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Sirazuddoullah Kutubi.
The court also found Ali guilty of charges of hiding the body after the murder in his efforts to conceal the murder evidence as he strangulated his wife following a family feud.
He buried the body in a rugged hilly area, according to the prosecution. The court examined 12 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
