CCC fixes 240 spots for cattle slaughtering

ANWAR HUSSAIN, Ctg

In a bid to expedite the cleaning work during Eid-ul-Azha this year, the Chittagong City Corporation authorities have so far selected 240 sites under 41 wards of the city for sacrificing animals.
After selection of all the sites, the proposal will be sent to the Local Government and Rural development (LGRD) ministry in a few days for getting final approval.
There will be butchers for cutting meat and religious persons to perform sacrificial rites in every sacrificial sites of the city. The city residents could avail the service provided by the corporation after paying the due charges, said the CCC sources.
While talking to The Independent, Rashid Ahmed, secretary of the CCC said they came up with the new idea of selecting sacrificial sites aiming to keep the city clean from sacrificial waste.  “We have selected five sacrificial sites in each ward of the city. In some cases, the number of sacrificial sites, however, has to be increased more than five given the number of population and area of the ward,” said the secretary of the corporation.  “There is no legal obligation in sacrificing animals in the selected sites. However, we want to encourage the city dwellers about the cleanliness issues,” added the secretary.
“We have taken a decision to print and distribute 82,000 leaflets among the city residents. We will request the city dwellers through the leaflets to keep his or her vicinity clean from sacrificial waste. Besides, we will launch an awareness-raising campaign in the city through loudspeakers; publish awareness-raising advertisements in the local newspapers,” added Ahmed.    Shafiqul Mannan Siddiqui, chief conservancy officer of the CCC said that they have set a target of cleaning most of the sacrificial waste from the city by 5pm on Eid day.
“As part of the cleaning drive, we have cancelled vacation of the cleaning staff of the corporation. Around 25,000 cleaning staff will work for cleaning the city on Eid day and the day after Eid. We will also use 20 water vouchers for cleaning the sacrificial sites of the city,” added Siddiqui.
