DB detains Drik founder Shahidul Alam

The Detectives Branch of police detained Shahidul Alam, founder and managing director of Drik Gallery and chairman of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, yesterday night, reports UNB. Additional Commissioner of DMP (DB) Abdul Baten said a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police detained Shahidul from his Dhanmondi residence for interrogation over his Facebook posts on the ongoing student protests.

Head of Photography Department of Pathshala  Tanvir Murad Topu said a group of plainclothes men identifying them as law enforcers picked the photographer at about 10:30pm.

According to Al Jazeera, Shahidul Alam yesterday told the news media that the protests by students across the country were driven by “larger” factors than road safety alone.

He highlighted “the looting of the banks, the gaggling of the media, the extrajudicial killings, disappearings, bribery and corruption”, said the report.
