A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Olipur Bazar in Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla Saturday night, reports UNB. The deceased was identified as Mehedi Hasan, son of Ekramul Haque of the village. Tipped-off, when a police team conducted a drive at the bazar a groups of drug traders opened fire on the police personnel, prompting them to take action, police said. At one stage, Mehedi was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet wound while three police members were also injured.
Later, he was rushed to Comilla Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead, they added. Law enforcement agencies have been continuing anti-drug drives across the country. Since May 12 this year, more than 200 suspected drug peddlers have been killed in ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers or found dead at different places in the country.
