The myth regarding the importance of Tamim Iqbal’s start in shaping up the innings in Bangladesh’s favour was again preciously justified. He fell for just one in Bangladesh’s first T20 against West Indies and the team lost the momentum to be defeated by seven wickets by D/L method.
However with the back to the wall to keep the three-match series alive, Tamim found his form, blasting a whirlwind 44 ball-74, which led Bangladesh a 12-run win over the Caribbean side yesterday in Florida. Thereby Bangladesh made a winning-start in USA, making the third match today a series-deciding one game.
During his match-winning 74 in which he clattered six fours and four sixes, Tamim Iqbal however reached 1,000 International runs across three formats in 2018 as he needed 65 runs prior to the match. His runs now stand 1009. In the eight ODI matches, Tamim had already scored 539 runs with two centuries with a staggering 89.23 average.
While his number in ODI is mind-boggling, his record is Test and T20 is poor, giving an indication as to why Bangladesh didn’t have much success in those two formats. Though he played a match-winning 74 yesterday, he scored 307 runs at an average of 25.58 in 12 T20 matches. In four Test matches, Tamim had just 163 runs, averaging a below-par 20.63.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza therefore always insisted on Tamim’s start across the format. The stat however shows how precious the ODI captain is.
However like the ODI series, the other senior players also dazzled around Tamim Iqbal to script a sensational win over a side, which is world champions in this format.
More preciously it was Shakib Al Hasan who didn’t let Tamim’s start wasted. The T20 captain contributed in victory with an attacking 38 ball-60, smacking nine fours and one six and also claimed two wickets for 19 runs in four overs. Shakib was aptly supported by left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam Opu’s three for 28 as West Indies were held back to 159 for nine in reply of Bangladesh 171 for five.
Despite Shakib’s all-round performance, Tamim was adjudged man of the match indeed for giving a timely impetus to the innings. However still the opener credited Shakib for shifting the tide of the innings with his arrival to the crease.
"I think Shakib changed the momentum, to be very honest," Tamim said after the match that went down to the final over. "As soon as he came in, he started to get the boundaries and I think that knock of his was special. Because we didn't have a flying [start in] first ten overs, his innings was something really important."
"We always knew that we were capable of coming back strongly. After the first ten overs, we recovered really well and got the maximum runs that we could have scored. We knew they had got some serious power-hitters in the team, so we needed to keep on getting wickets and that's exactly what happened.”
"Sometimes 200 is not enough, sometimes 150 is enough. So we knew that we need to give our best. We need to field as best as we can and that's what we did. I think every bowler did their job. Fizz (Mustafizur Rahman) was brilliant, Abu Hider was special. I think everybody did their job."
