The BNP yesterday said everyone must unite to remove the government for its “anti-people” stance. “The present government is anti-people and plundered the nation. So, we have to get united to remove it,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference at the party central office in Dhaka.
Fakhrul alleged that everyone, including diplomats and journalists, were being attacked by Awami League (AL) activists. “Ruling party-backed terrorists carried out an attack on US ambassador Marcia Bernicat. This has tarnished Bangladesh’s image,” he said.
He demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
The BNP leader also defended the leaked phone conversation between BNP leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and one Naomi over the ongoing students’ movement. “Where is the offence in it? The entire country is supporting the students’ agitation. We have also expressed our support to the movement. Even politicians, police and intellectuals have termed the movement ,” he said.
He, however, expressed apprehension that the government may release his statement after distorting it. “Now, all types of machinations are possible,” he added.
The BNP leader alleged that the law enforcers had carried out two raids on Saturday night to arrest Khosru. “They were also carrying out a drive against a democratic movement by raiding the homes of Chhatra Dal leaders,” he said. He also alleged that ruling party leaders were blaming the BNP for the ongoing movement in order to shift focus.
He claimed that Chhatra League cadres had attacked innocent children at Dhanmondi and different parts of the country
on Saturday, injuring many of them. BNP standing committee member Dr Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Amanullah Aman and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were among those present at the press
conference.
