Apart from the Army and the Coast Guard, the government is going to deploy an Ansar battalion at Mawa and Janjira points on both sides of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge to ensure its security. The Public Security Division of the home ministry has already prepared a proposal, which will be sent to the public administration ministry, seeking inclusion of the new battalion in the organogram of the forces, according to sources in the home ministry and the Ansar.
A total of 416 members of Ansar would perform their duties under the new battalion at the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, the sources said.
Talking to The Independent, a senior official of the home ministry said the Ansar members would ensure the security of the infrastructure and also patrol the bridge sites. “Currently, there are 135 members of Ansar at Mawa and Janjira points of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge,” he said.
A total of 39 battalions of Ansar, including two female battalions, are working as paramilitary auxiliary forces across the country.
On December 12, 2015, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction work of the 6.15-km-lomng Padma Multipurpose Bridge at Jajira point in Shariatpur district. The government is building the bridge, the country's largest
infrastructure, with its own fund of Tk. 28,000 crore.
On completion of the project, nearly six crore people of 19 southern districts will be connected with the rest of the country, including the capital.
The work of the Padma bridge is broadly divided into five parts—the main bridge, river training, two link roads, and infrastructure (service area) construction. The two-tier bridge has provisions for movement of vehicles on the upper tier of the bridge and trains on the lower tier.
