Amid the ongoing student-led protest across the country demanding safer roads, a 22-year-old bike rider was killed by a bus in Dhaka’s Maghbazaar area yesterday. The rider, Saiful Islam, was hit by a Satkhira Paribahan bus around 1.40 pm. He was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where he was declared dead by the doctor on duty.
Following the accident, a mob torched the bus, thrashed the driver and then handed him over to Ramna police. The errant driver was identified as Imran Hossain, 25. His assistant, Saimon, however, managed to flee after the incident, said deputy commissioner of police (Ramna division) Maruf Hossain Sardar.
The victim worked as a nurse at the privately-run Dhaka Community Medical College and Hospital and lived at Khilgaon in Dhaka.
Sardar said the bus was going towards Malibagh when it hit Saiful’s motorcycle right after it came down from the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover. The bus dragged Saiful and his motorcycle for a few metres before coming to a stop. A case will be filed against the driver of the bus, he added.
