Youngsters ‘lack confidence’

The youngsters once again failed to come with the terms despite a call for them to take the onus in the T20 series, following their disappointing outing in Test and ODI series.

After driving the side in the ODI series, the senior players however had bad day in the office in first T20 series and that was a platform for the juniors to show their credential. But all of them failed to grab the opportunity, causing Bangladesh’s seven-wicket defeat to West Indies in D/L method.

Tamim Iqbal was instrumental in Bangladesh’s 2-1 victory over the hosts in the ODI series but in the first T20, he was removed in the first ball after being stumped at the delivery of off-spinner Ashley Nurse in the first ball of the match. For his opening partner Soumya Sarkar it was a great platform to show that he could relieve Bangladesh despite Tamim’s early dismissal. But Soumya who was included into the side by the direct advocacy from the team management failed to give the side a much-needed relief, raising the question once again that whether Bangladesh would be at safe hands after the retirement of the senior players.

Much to the dismay of the team management, the attacking opener was dismissed in the first ball he faced. Another young player Liton Das, who was also grooming up for the future mainstay of Bangladesh batting, got the start but simply failed to carry on. His dismissal left the task on two senior players—Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim—both of whom also couldn’t resist the damage actually unlike the ODI series.

Ariful Haque and Mehidy Hasan Miraj, could do something but they also failed, leaving Bangladesh at mediocre 143 for nine at the end of the 20 overs. In a pitch, which wasn’t too difficult, it was always easy task and nothing miracle happened.

There are still two T20s, which will be held in Florida on August 5 and 6, in which the youngsters could make amend. But their performance in the whole tour indicated that they are short of confidence, a BCB insider said wishing anonymity.

“You can’t put entire blame on the youngsters, the team management also should be blamed to some extent. When a young player knows that he has three matches to prove his credential, he definitely would remain scared, which won’t help his cause,” he said.  It’s also true that they young players got enough opportunities to prove them at the highest level but none could cement their place.

“They may get enough chances but they didn’t get chances at regular basis. Sometimes a player gets three matches and if he does badly he is replaced by another. When another couldn’t do anything worthy he is replaced by other. It’s a cycle, at the end we get back to that player who gets three matches. He again gets three matches and remained scared about his future. What we need to do that we should give this player at least one year time to prove him, which we are not doing.”

“The main thing is to comfort them by saying that they need not to fear of being chopped. Instead they should play their natural game. The young players also should be fearless, otherwise they couldn’t cement them, which won’t be good for Bangladesh cricket.”
