Physician sent to jail for dowry

A Tangail court yesterday sent a physician to jail in a dowry case.  The convicts is identified as Prasenjit Biswas Partha, medical officer at civil surgeon's office in Jhenidah.

According to the prosecution, Dr Prasenjit Biswas Partha, of Baghajatin in Jhenidah, married Dr Priynaka Das, daughter of Dr Ananda Mohan Das of Akurtakurpara of Tangail, on October 14 in 2015. Prasenjit and his family had been demanding Tk 30 lakh and 20 tolas of gold as dowry since her marriage. The family members of Priynaka paid Tk 5 lakh in cash and handed over 10 tolas of gold. But Prasenjit’s family members were not satisfied and creating pressure to pay rest money and gold. At one stage Priyanka along with his son went her parents’ house in Tangail. Priynaka filed a case with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate-4 in Tangail and the court sent her husband to prison yesterday.

Housewife found dead

Faridpur: A pregnant housewife was found dead at Phulsuti village in Nagarkanda upazila on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Chaina Begum, 26, wife of Shohag Mollah of the village.

Syed Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Nagarkanda Police Station, said getting information of Chaina's illness, her relatives went to Chaina's house and found her lying on the floor around 9 am.

Quoting family members, police said Shohagh Ali used to torture Chaina, a mother of a four-year old child, since their marriage as she prevented him from taking drugs.

Nannu Matobbar, brother of Chaina, claimed that Shohagh strangled Chaina sometime in the night following brawl over drug and left the scene to escape arrest.

‘Enact law to protect journos’

Speakers at a workshop, entitled 'Supporting Human Rights Defenders' working for women's and girls' rights in Bangladesh, underscored the need of enacting a law to protect human rights defenders like journalists and human rights activists.

'News Network' arranged the start-up workshop at Jessore Circuit House where a total of 40 journalists, social activists, religious leaders and NGO representatives from Jashore and Satkhira district took part.

The speakers said that human rights defenders are being killed and harassed now and then in the country. They need protections by the law of the country as it is signatory of the United Nations.
