Justice Abu Sayeed’s death anniversary today
The 3oth death anniversary of former president Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury will be observed today, says a press release.
On the occasion, Qurankhawni and milad mahfil will be held at Nagbari Jame mosque in Tangail today. Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury National Memorial Council will organise a memorial meeting soon marking the day.
Justice Chowdhury resigned as a vice-chancellor of Dhaka University on March 15, 1971 in protest of killing of two students on the campus by the Pakistani occupation army. Later, he played significant role in mobilising world opinion for the independence of Bangladesh as special envoy of the provisional government. In 1985, Justice Chowdhury was unanimously elected chairman of UN Human Rights Commission.
He authored five books – Probashe Muktijuddher Dinguli, Manobadhikar, Muslim Family Law in the English Court and Human Rights in the Twenty Century and Shadhinatar Protisruti O Onnanno.
Relatives and admirers were requested to pray for salvation of the departed soul.
4 jailed for life in murder case
A court in Khulna on Tuesday sentenced life-term imprisonment to four members of a family for killing a day labourer in 2003 in Khulna.
The Judge of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal MA Rob Howlader handed down the verdict and also fined Taka 10,000 each. The convicts are Ishak Sheikh, 60, his wife Chelly Begum, 50, his son Anis Sheikh, 30, and Younus Sheikh, 35.
All convicts except Younus Sheikh were present during the verdict. According to the prosecution, the four hacked Fazlur Rahman, 27, son of late Afsar Sheikh, a resident at village Naihati under Rupsha upazila, to death on March 23, 2003 over a land dispute.
Kulsum Begum, mother of the victim, filed a case against four people with Rupsha police station on the next day.
‘Drug peddler’ beaten to death
A drug peddler who received mass-beating at his house at Dattarail Naoapara village in Sylhet on Monday afternoon, died at Osmani Medical College Hospital at night.
The deceased was identified as Lipon Chandra Deb, 40, son of late Nagendra Chandra Deb of the village.
Being tipped-off that Lipon has been carrying out drug business at his house in broad daylight, police with the help of the locals conducted a drive at the house to arrest him, police sources said.
As the law enforcers approached to arrest him, Lipon pelted a broken bottle at the locals and policemen, forcing the locals to react befittingly.
The local offered a good-beating to the drug trader, leaving him severely injured. Later, Lipon was admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injury around 9pm.
Georgia University professor meets UGC chief
Professor Amrit Bart, Dean and Director, Office of Global Programme of University of Georgia, USA called on Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman of UGC on Tuesday, says a press release.
Md AM Shahbuddin, associate professor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and Afshana Parven of Asian Institute of Technology assisted Bart.
During the call on, Bart offered scholarship, training and internship opportunities to Agricultural University’s students of Bangladesh. In this regard, a MoU may be signed between University of Georgia and UGC shortly, he said. He also said they want to exchange students, faculty members and research collaborations with the universities of Bangladesh.
In his speech, UGC chairman said that Bangladesh has numerous problems in the agricultural sector that needs to be solved. “Our students and faculty members will be greatly benefited from the exchange offer. Besides, it will help us to enhance the quality of agricultural education.”
