Delhi prepares to deport Rohingyas

There seems to be no respite for the Rohingyas of Myanmar, considered to be world’s most persecuted community, as the Indian government is preparing to deport the persecuted and traumatised people from the country, according to media reports of India.

A top official of the government of Bangladesh, which is sheltering about 13 lakh (1.3 million) Rohingyas, has told The Independent that it is a matter between India and Myanmar.

“But, given the plight of the Rohingyas, it will not be humane to deport these people,” he said.  

The Indian government told the parliament on Tuesday that Rohingyas, who don’t have refugee status, are illegal migrants and they will be deported after preparations of their details.

“Their entry is illegal. They are living here illegally. There is no question of providing them any facility from the government…We are not here for giving rights to illegal migrants,” Indian state minister for home affairs Kiren Rijiju said during question and answer session.

Without providing details, he also said the government has reports that Rohingyas are involved in illegal activities.

He informed the House that the 40,000 or so Rohingya in India were mostly found in Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad (Telangana), Mewat in Haryana and Tripura.

Meanwhile, the central home ministry of India has sent an advisory to state governments to enumerate, observe and collect biometric data of Rohingya migrants living in India.

Revealing the information, Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the parliament that the government had received reports of Rohingya people’s involvement in illegal activities. Indian government also made it clear that Rohingyas were “illegal migrants” and not “refugees.”

“The Border Security Force (BSF) and Assam Rifles have also been sensitised over not allowing in more illegal immigrants,” Rajnath Singh said.

Responding to a question on deporting the migrants, he said his department was waiting for the enumeration process to be complete, after which it would be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) who will in turn take it up with the government of Myanmar.
