The High Court (HC) yesterday formed a three-member investigation committee to assess the liabilities and compensation issues relating to the death of the two students who were run over by a bus on Airport Road in the capital on Sunday.
In an interim order, the HC bench formed a three-member committee, headed by Prof. Mizanur Rahman, who is the director of Accident and Research Institute of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The other members are Prof. Hadiuzzaman and ‘Nirapad Sorok Chai’ chairman Ilias Kanchan.
The committee will assess the liabilities for the accident, identify those responsible for it, and fix compensations for the families of the victims.
This has been confirmed by barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kazal.
The HC bench, comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Khairul Alam, gave the order after Kazal placed the matter before the court for its directive.
On July 30, the same HC bench had asked the owner of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan to pay Tk. 5 lakh within seven days to each of the families of the two students. It had also directed the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to submit a report on August 12 after ensuring compliance with its directives.
The HC bench had also directed Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan to bear all expenses for the treatment of the students who were injured in the accident.
Meanwhile, on May 30, another bench of the HC formed a similar committee to identify those responsible for an accident and fix compensations for the family of Rajib Hossain, who lost his right arm after it got stuck between two buses on April 3 and later succumbed to his injuries on April 17.
The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Jahirul Hoque passed the order in line with a Supreme Court directive.
On May 8, the HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque had issued an order to provide Tk. 1 crore as compensation to the family of Rajib Hasan.
