Quota reform protest rally held on DU campus

Activists of the quota reform movement once again gathered on the Dhaka University (DU) campus yesterday. They declared withdrawal of their class boycott programme and demanded immediate release of the arrested leaders. They also demanded immediate reforms in the current quota system. The declaration came from the joint convener of the movement, Nurul Hoque Nuru, at a protest rally held near the Raju Sculpture.

The activists observed one minute's silence in remembrance of the school students who died in a bus accident on Sunday. The protest rally moved around the campus from 11am. “The Prime Minister is regularly being misinformed about our demands. We want to meet her to explain our position," said Nuru.  "Earlier, the Prime Minister said that Gonobhaban was open to all. So, she should listen to us,” he also said.

"The government formed a committee to resolve the situation within 15 days. But 90 days have been added to the deadline. It's clear to all that the next national elections will come knocking at the door by that time and the problem will not be addressed. We want immediate reforms in the quota system, otherwise our protest will rage on," he added.

Referring to Obaidul Quader’s comment, Nuru said: “It was said that the Chaatra League had not launched any attack on general students. This is completely wrong. Everyone, including mediapersons, clearly saw the attackers. These elements threatened to rape the girls, attacked general students, and harassed our teachers. They should not go unpunished.”

"We'll launch a tougher programme to protest against such attacks in future," he added. The Bangladesh Students' Federation opened a photo exhibition in front the DUCSU building to display the photos of recent attacks on quota reformists across the country.
