Top-order batsman Imrul Kayes dreams to play in the next ICC Cricket World Cup, England and Wales-2019 for Bangladesh though he is not regular in the national team.
Last time Kayes wore national team’s jersey when he played Test against Sri Lanka in January-February, 2018. He had scored so far 95 runs (40,19,19 and 17) from the two-Test series at home turf.
Even the left-handed batsman played his last one-day format game against South Africa in East London in October, 2017, the format on which the next World Cup will be played.
Despite all those, the 31-year-old Imrul Kayes said that he will capitalise the opportunity if any such chance comes to him to perform in the next World Cup.
“Its main thing for a cricketer is to practice and go on trying. As it’s my work to try, I’ll try to do it,” said Imrul Kayes.
“If the chance comes to me (to play in the World Cup), I will try to utilise that in right vein,” Imrul told media after finishing his individual practice session in Mirpur yesterday.
“I always try to perform what I should do for me and for the team,” he added.
Despite getting enough chances of playing for the national fold, this top-order batsman could not establish himself as a dependable batsman in any format of games. His batting stats reflects his struggling story if we scan through his batting record in the last 10 Tests where he has only a half-century (78) what he made against England in October 2016.
The left-handed batsman has a couple of half-centuries (59 against New Zealand in Nelson in December, 2016 and 68 against South Africa in Paarl in October, 2017) in his last 10 one-day internationals.
Even his batting record in T20 internationals has not so scintillating because his highest score was 36 in this shorter-version what he did against Sri Lanka in April, 2017. He is yet to score a fifty in this format after being vaulted into T20 international in 2010.
When asked him about any regret for not getting chance of playing in the ongoing full-fledged series against the West Indies, the diminutive batsman made his flat confession blaming his fate.
“Maybe the series was not in my luck,” he said.
“I, of course, think it in that way. I think if I get any chance, I’ll play for the team,” he continued saying this.
“It’s a big matter of luck to play for the Bangladesh team. I will try to play better cricket whenever I play for the country,” he added.
About the next T20 series against the Caribbean side, Imrul said that winning T20 is obviously possible for them if they could play according to their plan.
“We’re in good shape after winning the one-day series. If we can play our natural game especially the way we played the one-day series we’ll also do better in three-match T20 series,” Meherpur-born Imrul thought.
“Of course, West Indies are stronger side in this format that we know all. I think if our bowlers could bowl in right way what they did in the last one-day match, it’ll then be better for us,” he viewed.
