Shipping minister Shajahan Khan has expressed regret for his unwarranted comment on the tragic death of two students in a road accident on Airport Road on Sunday. He has also offered his condolences to the bereaved families. The minister yesterday expressed his regret at a delegate meeting in the city’s BCIC auditorium. “I'm also praying for early recovery of the students who have been injured in the incident,” he said.
Those who were responsible for the death of the two students would be brought to book, said Khan. “No transport organisation will show dissent if we take legal action against the persons responsible for the gruesome accident,” he added.
The minister also urged people to disregard his comment on the tragic accident. He also accepted the criticism from all quarters
that came immediately after his comment on the incident.
Meanwhile, the minister for road transport and bridges, Obaidul Quader, urged the agitated students, who have taken to the streets in protest against the death of their fellow students, to cool down. “I urge the students to cool down. You should concentrate on your studies,” he said.
He was talking to reporters at AL president Sheikh Hasina’s political office in Dhanmondi yesterday. The minister said the government did not sit idle after the tragic accident. “The persons involved in the accident were arrested within 48 hours. They have been brought under legal action. The government’s position is very clear in this regard,” he added.
On Sunday, Abdul Karim alias Rajib Uddin Rajib, 18, a student of Class XII, and Dia Khanam Mim, 17, a student of Class XI, were crushed under the wheels of a bus of Jabal—Noor Paribahan on the Airport Road flyover, adjacent to the Armed Forces Medical College in Kurmitola area of Dhaka.
