A 19-km stretch of road inside the Madhupur forest in Tangail district has become a safe haven for miscreants.
The area covers 9 kilometers from Jalchhatra to Rasulpur and 10 kilometers from Rasulpur to Dokhola. Murder, rape, snatching, abduction, cheating in the name of dollar exchange, drug peddling and motorcycle lifting have become a daily affair here.
Locals have requested greater police vigilance and police escort for vehicles travelling through that route.
It is learned that the stretch of road from Jalchhatra to Rasulpur on the Tangail–Mymensingh zonal highway passes through a dense forest. There is no habitation, except at the Telki Bus Station. This area has become a favourite ground for miscreants. At least five bodies have been recovered from this jungle in the last one year.
The stretch of road from Rasulpur to Dokhola inside the forest has fallen into disuse. It once was the only way to go to Dokhola. But the road lost its importance with the construction of the Jalchhatra-Dokhola road by the LGED. Miscreants are so active in this area that no one uses this road even in broad daylight.
Yakub Ali, ex-chairman of the Solakuri Union Parishad, said miscreants were highly active in the jungle. They rule the area on the border of Tangail, Mymensing and Jamalpur districts.
Ali also said the deputy commissioners and superintendent of polices of the three districts should launch a joint operation in curbing crimes. He also demanded the establishment of a police outpost at Dokhola and a police station in Solakuti to check crimes. Joyenshahi Adibashi Unnayan Parisad President Eugine Nokrek said that many bodies had been recovered from the jungle in recent times. Snatching had become a regular feature there, he added.
Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam, in-charge of the Aurunkhola police outpost, said that the outpost provided protection to vehicles and their passengers. Police escort for vehicles on this route had remained suspended for the last 18 months, he added.
Safiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Madhupur Police Station, said a patrol vehicle has been allotted for the Aurunkhola outpost inside the jungle to speed up police procedural work. There was greater vigilance now and the number of crimes had come down, he added.
