3 JMB men held in C’nawabganj   

Chapainawabganj: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) detained three members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Ghion village in Nachole upazila on Saturday night, reports UNB.

The arrestees were identified as Nazrul, 50, son of Jaher Uddin, Abu Bakkar, 38, son of Fazlur Rahman and Selim Reza, 27, son of Golam Rabbani, residents of Shibganj upazila.

On information, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the area around 11:45 am and arrested them from a cottage used for agricultural works.

2 toddlers die falling in gutter

Dinajpur: Two toddlers met tragic deaths after falling into a gutter near their house at Khansama Upazila in Dinajpur on Saturday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased were identified as 19 month-old Juthi Rani Roy, daughter of Tapos Chandra Roy and her cousin 15-month old Niloy Chandra Roy, son of Shaymol Chandra Roy of Kedarpara village in Khansama Upazila.

Neighbors said the duo went outside of their house while Juthi’s mother was busy working in the kitchen around 8:30 am. As the anxious family members started searching for them, they spotted the children inside a gutter made for disposing of waste water near a tube-well of their house and rescued them.

After they were rushed to the Pakerhat Health Complex, doctors declared them dead. Bhabki UP chairman Md Safikul Islam confirmed the matter.

Silver jewelry, phensidyl seized

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized silver ornaments and phensidyl syrup smuggled from India in Amrakhali area here yesterday morning.

Tipped off, a BGB team conducted a drive in the area in the morning and seized the Indian contraband items, said Subedar Monir Hossain, company commander of BGB Benapole port. However, no one was arrested in this connection, he added.

One-lakh pieces contraband tablets seized from border

RANGPUR: Police seized one-lakh pieces of contraband cow fattening tablets from Nawdapara road on Hili frontier under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur district yesterday, reports BSS.

“A special police team raided the area and seized one-lakh pieces of smuggled cow fattening tablets worth Taka one-lakh from the spot in the early morning,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hakimpur Thana Abdul Hakim Azad.

Sensing the presence of the police team, the smugglers, however, managed to escape the scene leaving their smuggled tablets packed in a sac there.

A case was filed in this connection with Hakimpur Thana, the OC added.
