Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and its Games Development chairman Khaled Mahmud Sujon on Saturday expressed his disappointment not to take place district league on regular basis at different districts across the country.
Sujon also said that the cricketers they find out from the age groups including Under-14, 15 and 16 with the help of their coaches, these players do not get opportunity to flourish themselves for not being held district league regularly after a stage.
“We work with the young players of Under-14, 15 and 16 years of age. These cricketers are selected by the BCB-appointed coaches from some district league and then forwarded to us,” said Khaled Mahmud Sujon.
“To be honest, arranging leagues at district level is not our job. It totally depends on the district sports association. It’s very upsetting to see not many leagues organised now. I myself played a lot of tournament outside at age-level and got to know many cricketers from those tournaments. But it has drastically decreased now. Many of the districts don’t have age-level leagues. It is a concern for our cricket,” Sujon told media before talking with the BCB appointed district-level coaches following a day-long workshop in Mirpur yesterday.
“Players at this level work really hard but they’ve a poor game sense as they’re not being able to play enough competitive cricket games. All the foreign coaches also complain the cricketers at age-level have very little game sense. I think the board should inspire the districts to organise leagues on regular basis,” he added.
It’s learnt that district league is being held only 30 different districts where some of the districts are holding it after one year. But it is not played in 34 districts that made the board concerned. The board is going to take some effective steps to alleviate the problems as the Games Development chairman said that they will also work to minimise the difficulties and irregularities at the district level cricket.
“Maximum of the coaches here are Level Two qualified. We prefer level two and those districts that do not have a Level Two coach we appoint a Level One coach,” he said.
“The coaches also run private academies so we find many players coming from those academies while players from other academies get neglected. We’re trying to monitor those issues which started last year,” he added.
