AL establishes women rights in country, says Anisul
BRAHMANBARIA: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Friday said Awami League (AL) established women rights in the country, reports BSS.
“Women had no identity in the society during the tenure of BNP and Ershad’s Jatiya Party. They had no rights. They were regularly became victims of acid attacks. Sheikh Hasina changed the scenario and stopped all kinds of oppression against them,” he said.
The law minister came up with the observations while addressing a rally of Women Awami League on Nasrin Nabi Pilot Girls High School premises at Akhaura, Brahmanbaria this morning.
Presided over by Akhaura Upazila Women Awami League president Monjuara Begum, the rally was also addressed by Akhaura municipality mayor Takjil Khalifa and upazila Awami League general secretary Peara Begum, among others.
Huq said BNP-Jamaat alliance doesn’t believe in Bangladesh.
“If they (BNP-Jamaat) come into power, Bangladesh will not have anything good left. To keep the forward march of development going, we need to make Sheikh Hasina prime minister again,” he added.
Eight ‘drug traders’ surrender
RANGPUR: Eight absconding drug traders surrendered before the law enforcement agencies at a function held on Chandrapur High School and College ground under Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat district on Thursday night, reports BSS.
Superintendent of Police (SP) for Lalmonirhat attended the function as the chief guest while Chandrapur Union Parishad organised it.
All the surrendered drug traders formally took oath giving commitments to the police administration that they will never involve in any illegal drug-related activities.
With Chandrapur union Chairman Jahangir Alam in the chair, Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rabiul Hassan, Assistant Superintendent of Police (B Circle) Hossain Shaheed Sohrawardi, General Secretary of Lalmonirhat district Community Policing Committee Mizanur Rahman and Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Thana Mokbul Hossain addressed the event as special guests.
On the occasion, drug traders Khabir Uddin, Shablu Mian, Hafizur Rahman, Bablu Mian, Mofazzal Hossain and Rabiul Islam of Khamarbhati village and Faruk Hossain and Shahinur Islam of Lotabor village under Chandrapur union surrendered.
Welcoming the surrendered drug traders to the mainstream society, the SP said they must forget their previous bad activities and police would assist them to rehabilitate, if necessary, so that they could begin normal life.
“We have to hate drugs to save the society from the wrath of drugs,” he said and called upon the other drug traders to give up the illegal drug business and come back to normal life.
Body recovered in Jashore

The body of a young man was found in a sack at Mudli in the suburb of the district town on Friday.
Police recovered the body of Sohel, 30, son of late Nurannabi of Mudli Khapara, from a mahogany tree garden near Mudli railway crossing around 11am.
Family sources said two young men called Sohel out their house on Thursday night but he did not return home.
Locals spotted his body in a sack in the tree garden in the morning and informed police.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Apurba Hasan said Sohel was accused in six cases, including of murder and drugs.
He was released from jail one month ago, the OC said, adding that he might have been killed following previous enmity over drug peddling.
Schoolgirl electrocuted
Jhenidah: A schoolgirl was electrocuted at Pobhati in the district town on Friday morning, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Ria Khatun, 10, a Class-IV student of Pobhati Khane Khoda Primary School and daughter of Saiful Islam of the area.
Officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Emdadul Haque Sheikh said Ria was electrocuted while switching on a light at her house around 11am, leaving her dead on the spot.
