A faction of pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday besieged two administrative buildings for the third consecutive day yesterday to press their five-point demand, including appointment of dean to the law faculty. They also boycotted the central orientation programme for the first year students held at the Zahir Raihan auditorium where UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan was present as chief guest.
However, under the banner of Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetanay Biswashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Samaj, around 35 teachers took position in front of the old administrative building from 8.30 am and continued their sit-in till 4pm. President of the teachers’ group Prof Ajit Kumar Majumder said, “Recently the vice-chancellor Prof Farzana Islam had appointed dean of law faculty and head of the provost committee without any election that is clearly violation of the university act. She also terminated nine hall provosts without consulting syndicate”.
“To protest such autocratic decision made by JU VC, We boycotted the orientation function. Besides, we also consider the matter of students’ interest in this regard”, he said.
