Court orders shifting of case to tribunal

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka yesterday ordered for sending all the documents, including the charge-sheet, of the case filed over the terrorist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in the city to the Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal, reports UNB. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman Hero passed the order after Metropolitan Magistrate Nurunnahar Yeasmin sent the charge-sheet to him for observations.

The case documents will be sent to the tribunal on Sunday, said court sources. Now, Judge of the Anti-terrorism Special Tribunal Mujibur Rahman will deal with the case. On July 23, police pressed charges against eight people in the sensational Holey Artisan cafe attack case.

Those charge-sheeted are Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, Mahmudul Hasan Mizan, Sohel Mahfuz, Rashidul Islam alias Rash, Boro Mizan, Hadisur Rahman Sagar, Mamunur Rashid Ripon and Shariful Islam Khaled. The law enforcers also recommended acquitting former North South University teacher Hasnat Karim of the charge.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Fahad Bin Amin denied bail to him yesterday. Hasnat Karim, also a businessman, was rescued along with 12 others during the commando operation at the Holey Artisan Bakery in the city's Gulshan area on July 2 following a 12-hour hostage standoff.

Twenty-two people -- nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian, one Bangladeshi-born American and two Bangladeshis -- were killed in the terror attack on the restaurant on July 1, 2016.
