The three-day DCs' conference ended yesterday (Thursday), with the field officials being told to discharge their duty in the right manner and see that the parliamentary elections are held peacefully. Senior ministers, including industries minister Amir Hossain Amu and home minister Asaduzzman Khan Kamal, made the plea during sessions of their respective ministries. After a session of the home ministry at the Secretariat yesterday, Asaduzzman Khan Kamal told reporters that he informed the DCs that members of law enforcement agencies were ready to provide security during the elections.
“Law enforcement agencies will provide logistical support to DCs after the election schedule is announced by the Election Commission (EC). We sought cooperation of the field officials to strengthen border patrol at different points. We have already strengthened the activities of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Bangladesh Coast Guard,” he said.
The DCs told the minister that there are a large number of inmates in jails. The home minister said steps would be taken to dispose of cases after consultation with the law ministry. At another
session, the minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, Anisul Huq, said the DCs were told to form district coordination committees, comprising the district judge, deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police, to dispose of cases in the lower courts.
“At present, there are about 40 lakh cases awaiting disposal and the backlog of pending cases have increased,” he added.
Replying to a question, the law minister said the government was planning to amend the existing Narcotics Control Act for speedy disposal ofdrug-related cases.
At another session with the DCs, Land Minister, Shamsur Rahman Sherif, asked the field officials to evict political offices set up on government land.
Talking to reporters after a session with the DCs, railway minister Mujibul Haque said the railways will start selling advance tickets from August 8 ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. “The advance ticket sale will continue till August 12,” he added.
Advance tickets for August 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 will be sold on August 8, 9,10, 11 and 12, respectively, he said. For Eid-ul-Azha this year, nine pairs of special trains will be run.
On the last day of the DCs’ conference, secretaries and ministers of the Public Security Division, Security Service Division, social eelfare ministry, religion affairs ministry, law ministry, land ministry, works Ministry, ICT ministry, health ministry, foreign affairs ministry, shipping ministry, and the fisheries and livestock Ministry attended different sessions.
