Evaluation of PEC answer scripts in same upazila

The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has made some changes in the Primary Examination Completion (PEC) examinations. These include changes in the routine and evaluating answer scripts by teachers of the upazila where the exams are held.

The PEC and equiva lent exams will begin on November 18 and end on the 26th. Ministry sources said the exams would begin at 10:30am and continue till 1pm. Earlier, the timing was from 11am to 1:30pm.

Previously, the answer scripts used to be swapped between upazilas, but from this year these would be evaluated by a panel of teachers of the same upazila, ministry sources said.

“We have changed the evaluation system of answer scripts. When the answer scripts are sent to other upazilas, it takes time due to procedural matters. If the answer scripts are evaluated in the same upazila, it will take less time,” AFM Manzur Kadir, additional secretary of the ministry, told The Independent yesterday (Wednesday).

He said: “The evaluation system has been changed because re-evaluation of answer scripts after results takes much time when students challenge their results.”

Asked who would evaluate the papers, Kadir said, “There will be a panel of competent teachers under the supervision of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) as convenor and upazila education officer as member secretary. This panel will evaluate the answer scripts. The panel of teachers will be constituted later.”

Besides, there is good news for examinees with special needs. They will get an additional 10 minutes during exams. This means they will now get 30 minutes more, besides the 2.5 hours.

“Earlier, the examinees with special needs used to get an additional 20 minutes. Now, we have added 10 minutes. So they will now get an additional 30 minutes, along with 2.5 hours. We have to pay proper attention to our disabled children to bring them to the mainstream of education. As they are our special children, we have decided to provide them some extra facilities. So, we have increased the time for them,” he added.

These decisions were taken after a meeting of the ministry yesterday, sources said. The meeting also decided not to hold any exam on Saturday, keeping in mind children of the Christian community.  This year, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has started making changes in the PEC exams.

Several months ago, the ministry brought about massive changes in the set of questions and its markings for this year’s PEC and equivalent exams.

The ministry has dropped the Multiple Choice of Question (MCQ) system from the question papers of the PEC exams to avoid chances of question paper leak. This year, the PEC exams would be based on the creative system instead of MCQ. It means, the examinees will have to write all answers, ministry sources said.

“We are going to hold the PEC exams based on the creative system. The marks which were allocated for the MCQ have been dropped and the same marks have been merged with creative questions,” Kadir said. With so many changes made, the examinees have around four months to appear for the PEC and equivalent exams.
