Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan), a civil society platform, has said that voters have lost faith in the Election Commission (EC) due to increasing violation of the code of conduct in three city corporation polls.
Shujan released a statement at a press conference at the VIP lounge of the National Press Club yesterday (Wednesday). Shujan's coordinator, Dilip Kumar Sarker, read out the statement.
Shujan's president, M. Hafiz Uddin Khan, and executive officer and local government scholar, Tofail Ahmed, also delivered the statement.
It has been said in the statement that a mayor and some MPs participated in the campaign for the party candidate against the code of conduct. Violation of the code was propagated by a university's vice-chancellor, the principal of a medical college, the civil surgeon, the registrar of a university, non-government officials, employees' and the nurses' associations. No effective action has been taken by the EC on the breach of the code. This way, the voters' confidence is being lost.
The statement said the EC failed to instill confidence in the people during the Narayanganj, Comilla and Rangpur city corporation elections. In a few months from now, Sylhet, Barisal and Rajshahi city corporation elections will be held. This will set the stage for the general election. If the coming civic polls are questioned, a negative message will go out.
Shujan president M Hafizuddin Khan said: “People are not satisfied with the way the EC conducted the three city corporation elections. There were cases against some people a year ago, but the EC did not arrest them, though they were moving about openly. But they have been arrested just before the election. This is motivated.”
While answering a question, he said: “There was foul play in the three civic polls. Government officials were party to it. But no action has been taken by the EC.”
Dr Tofail Ahmed said: “Everyone can see what is happening in local government elections. The new model of election is called the 'Magura' model. How can the election model be called so? It can be assumed that there are discrepancies in elections. Votes are rigged at night, even at daytime. Before voters arrive at polling booths, ballot papers are gone. These indicate how elections are being conducted.”
